SouthShore Tampa Bay Fishing Forecast

June 2010

Summer has arrived and we now know that the Snook population took a big hit on the Southshore side of Tampa Bay due to the cold water temperatures of this past winter. The good new is that we still have a Snook fishery. I for one will not target them for awhile, if by chance I do hook one it’s because they are hanging out in some of my Redfish spots. If a snook is boated please handle with care. Snook  are now in the all important spawn cycle. This and the next two spawning season are important to bring the Snook population back to the numbers we enjoyed prior to the cold blast of 2010.

Trout will be in the deeper flats where the water will be a little cooler I expect the trout bite will slow just a little from the fantastic May Trout Bite we just experienced.

The Southshore flats should be holding a few schools of Redfish but May was a disappointment. Maybe the Reds will show up in June.

Mackerel have been off the wall in May and I expect to see this trend continue into June. I like using white bait both on a hook and as chum. I have had some 50 mackerel days in May kind of hard to top but we will give it our best. Look for the big bait pods the Mackerel, Tarpon and Kings will not be far behind.

Tarpon started showing up in May and I would expect to see Tarpon on the Southshore any day now Albeit in fewer numbers due to the cold winter we had.

This time of year I like to mix it up by targeting Redfish and Trout on the flats and Spanish Mackerel in open Bay waters. White bait will be my bait of choice. White bait is on the flats.
